All three cars are excellent and the best car is very much down to personal preference. The Jaguar XF saloon was launched in 2007 in the UK. It replaced the ageing S Type. It was the first mainstream car to carry the Jaguar ‘new look’, replacing the old fashioned Jaguar styling with twin oval headlights.
The car was first shown as the stunning CXF concept car When the actual car was launched the public were shocked how similar the actual car was to the CXF. The biggest difference were the larger headlights on the production vehicle. Apparently at the time the technology didn’t exist to make the thinner lights of the CXF road legal. This was changed at the mid cycle refresh.
Despite its modern looks the XF was based on the same platform as the S Type, which itself was based on an American Lincoln platform. The original XF was replaced by an all new car in 2015 which is built from a range of light weight materials including aluminium to save over 150kg compared to the original car.
Originally launched in 2007 as a saloon only, the XF Sportbrake was launched in 2012. The XF was the replacement for the S Type and led the ‘new look’ for Jaguar. The ‘new look’ has since been followed for the new XJ (2009) and the new mid range Jaguar the XE (2015).
XF is positioned in direct competition to the Mercedes E Class, Audi A6 and BMW 5 series. At launch the XF was only available with V6 or V8 engines. The first 4 cylinder engine didn’t come until the mid-cycle review in 2010, which also included a significant front end facelift.
The XF Sportbrake launched in 2012, giving class leading rear loadspace and an increase in rear seat headroom. The car is due to be replaced with an all new aluminium version in 2015
The Land Rover Discovery 4 is the facelifted version of the earlier Discovery 3. Based on exactly the same body and chassis, the car is fundamentally unchanged. However it has greatly benefitted from a comprehensive exterior and interior facelift in addition to a number of other improvements.
The Discovery 4 is a really great car, with a great interior space, 7 full size seats, a fantastic ride and a comfortable easy drive. It does everything anyone could ask in a relaxed and comfortable way.
The Range Rover Sport was launched in 2005. It marked a new transition for Land Rover. The first time it had a second Range Rover and the first time it had launched a sporting focused car. The Sport was designed to be high performnace SUV rather than an off road car. The car was targetted directly at the BMW X5 a similar performance related SUV. It was no surprise that the car launched 5 years after BMW had sold Land Rover!
There were however issues with the car. To enable the car to be launched quickly designers based the car on the Discovery 3 platform. Very good, but heavy and expensive. A heavy, performance orientated SUV was not a great recipe for success. The car sold well but was a bit of a disappointment. It was facelifted in 2009 which significantly upgraded the interior.
It was replaced by an all new aluminium car in 2012. Lighter, faster, more powerful and a much improved car.
The Volvo V70 is the large executive estate car from Volvo.
The BMW 5 series GT or Grand Tourer is the hatchback version of the ever popular BMW 5 series, large executive car.
The Audi A6 is the large executive car from Audi. The car competes directly with the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes E Class amongst others.
It was launched in 1995 as basically a renamed version of the Audi 100. The Audi 100 which originally launched in 1968 was named after the engine power in hp. By 1995 this naming logic had bencome a bit stretched so a more systematic naming approach was developed toiclude the Audi A4 and later the A8, A3, A1 etc.
The A6 is an extremley capable car available as saloon and estate (Avant) and also in 2 and 4 wheel drive versions with a wide range of engines. It is also extremely popular in China where the car is the premier government car available with a long wheelbase.
With its popularity in China its build voume is huge, even compared to the BMW and Mercedes equivalents
